It’s nerdy, it’s a video, it’s a must-see
Dell is putting Linux in, yes I knew that, but
You really have to be a Linux geek to understand.
Firstly, there’s penguins everywhere. Tux the penguin is the mascot for the Linux kernel.
People are waddling around like penguins. First one is guy behind Debian waddling in right doors.
Some people are wearing black hats and bow ties. Tux wears these.
The first reporter: his name is Gnome, a desktop environment used by Ubuntu. Mozilla is the open-source group responsible for Firefox, Thunderbird, and other good tools. He says “Kernels of knowledge.” The Linux kernel is the Graphical User Interface, like GNOME.
Second reporter: her name is Debian Gnusome. Debian is an integral part of Linux. GNU is the origin of the Free Software movement. “Many open sources of information..” open source means the program’s source code is available to anyone, an important part of the FSF movement. “Penguin process.” Talks about Mandela and Ubuntu. To some this may seem off-topic, but to others, it is a well-known explanation of the meaning of Ubuntu Linux’s name. Very random is the discussion of number of penguin species debate, but it’s funny.
Dell employee: Fawn Fiestyliciousopen-sourceroni. Feisty Fawn is the 7.04 (and at time of writing newest) Ubuntu version. And of course, open-source(“roni!”).
Dell employee 2: Bobubuntu McFreeware. Now it’s just getting easy. Ubuntu Linux and Freeware…yawn.
Dell employee 3: voice change guy. This is where “pervasive” comes in. He develops for “that other operating system” (Windows) and goes home to “play with his Linux”. He’s sensually stroking a penguin doll in his hands.
The Paris Hilton thing is really funny. Get it? You’re dead inside if you don’t.
Forever nerdy,
Sam
